Laboratory of Hydraulics & Fluid Mechanics (Flumen)

Located in Buildings D1 and B0 of UPC-BarcelonaTech's Campus Nord, the Hydraulic and Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of the Flumen Institute is part of the Hydraulic, Maritime and Environmental Engineering section of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering. Teaching, research, assessing, training and technology transfer activities are carried out in the laboratory in the fields of fluvial dynamics and hydrological engineering. In order to carry out these activities we have three laboratories:

  • Flumen Fluid Mechanics Laboratory (D1): Enclosed space of 800m2 and an available flow of 400l/s to feed any of the existing permanent installations: variable slope channel, pressure piping panel, scupper platform, spillways, crowning spill platform.
  • Flumen Laboratory of Hydraulic Reduced Models (B0): Open space of 1200m2 and an available flow of 550l/s. In this space the hydraulic reduced models are built and, once studied, they are destroyed if the space is needed. In addition, there are two permanent installations: a 200m labyrinth channel that is used to calibrate the algorithms for automatic control and a scale installation of a junction of two orthogonal streets that is used to calibrate numerical models of urban hydraulics.
  • Flumen Hydrometry Laboratory (D1): 15m2 space that is used to calibrate, store and prepare all the instrumentation used in the laboratories: pressure sensors, level sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, pyranometers, knives, anemometers, solar panels, limnimeters, dataloggers, etc.

  • Lab sessions for several courses of the Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Bachelor's Degree in Public Works Engineering, Master's Degree in Civil Engineering and Erasmus Mundus EuroAquae Master's Degree.
