The main objective of the PhD program in Construction Engineering is the student training, with specialist skills in the field of structural engineering and construction. That is to say training professionals able to conceive, design, calculate and build safe, durable, functional and aesthetic structures, using classical and new materials, as well as evaluate and maintain existing structures including historical heritage. On the other hand, it is intended to provide a strong background in efficient management of project and construction, paying particular attention to technological, constructive, economic, environmental, and sustainable development aspects. Moreover, the overall educational goal of the research phase is to provide a scientific and technical advanced training in the fields of structural engineering and construction, enabling the student to generate new knowledge, to raise new avenues of research and to investigate unresolved issues relating to new materials, resistant and functional behavior of structures, new structural forms, new methods of calculation and experimentation, new building systems and new ways of looking at relations with the environment. This big goal is accompanied by training students to communicate and transmit knowledge gained and research carried out by writing scientific papers, such as articles in journals and proceedings at international conferences, proposals and requests for research projects, among others. This will allow students to demonstrate their ability to understand the field of study that is involved and their ability to conceive, design and implement a rigorous search, with the possibility of extending the frontiers of knowledge.
